Non-Surgical Periodontal Treatment
Gingivitis, or mild gum disease, can usually be treated non-surgically, especially if caught early. The signs generally include red, swollen or tender gums, gums that bleed, bad breath and receding gums. It's possible in the early stages, however, you may not notice any symptoms. At MD Periodontics, we have two of the best periodontists Los Angeles has available. Along with our dental team, they routinely and successfully help patients eliminate gum disease, both in the early stages as well as more advanced inflammation, called periodontitis.
Scaling and Root Planing for Mild to Moderate Gum Disease
Once detected, and depending on the extent of the inflammation, we generally employ the least invasive treatment options at first. This usually entails scaling and root planing. Scaling is the process of removing tartar (hardened plaque) and bacteria from the surface of the teeth as well as below the gum line. Planing is the process of smoothing the root surface of the tooth (below the gum line).
We start by numbing the areas that are affected, using a local anesthetic. Then we perform scaling and planing using both hand and powered instruments. This procedure removes the infection-causing toxins from the tooth root below the gum line and inhibits future bacteria from adhering to the smooth surfaces.
Our board-certified Los Angeles periodontists will also advise you if there is any need for antimicrobial therapy. Saliva samples may be taken from infected sites in the mouth and analyzed for specific types of bacteria. If it's determined that aggressive bacteria are present, then the appropriate course of antibiotic treatment will be prescribed in order to eliminate the infection. Antibiotics can be taken in a pill form, or placed directly in the pockets surrounding the teeth. This aids in eliminating bacteria found in high association with aggressive gum disease.
