PRF - Platelet Rich Fibrin
Although platelet rich fibrin is commonly used in plastic surgery, heart surgery and orthopedic surgery, advances in technology have now made it possible for PRF to be used in dental practices. At MD Periodontics in Beverly Hills we provide our patients with PRF when needed to promote faster healing when undergoing gum surgery or having dental implants or wisdom teeth extractions.
Using platelet rich fibrin helps the body regenerate soft tissue and bone which is what causes the body to heal much faster. This greatly reduces the chance of complications leading to implant or graft failure and infections. Using platelet rich fibrin is especially useful for those with diabetes and other conditions which impair healing due to reduced blood flow.
What is platelet rich fibrin made from?
Platelet rich fibrin is a component of the blood. To obtain PRF a small amount of the patient’s blood is drawn and run through a centrifuge. This separates the blood into components; red blood cells, plasma, white blood cells and platelets. It is the concentrate of platelets which promotes healing. Platelet rich fibrin is a concentrate of white blood cells, platelets and fibrin. This material contains Platelet Derived Growth Factor (PDGF) which accelerates healing to a marked degree.
PRF concentrates healing power
At MD Periodontics, PRF is used in many procedures. Patients without sufficient bone mass for dental implants require bone grafting. Using PRF decreases the time needed for healing as well as the possibility of failed grafts. Using PRF in wisdom tooth removal prevents a condition called dry socket which is painful and can result in infection.
Using platelet rich fibrin in gum grafting procedures, dental implant surgery and extractions increases the success of these procedures because of the enhanced healing power of platelets generated from the patient’s own blood. This not only provides peace of mind for patients since there is no risk of disease transmission. It also ensures that the body will not reject the material.
Candidates for platelet rich fibrin treatment
During your initial consultation, Dr. Moshrefi or Dr. Daneshmand will determine if you are a good candidate for PRF treatment in relation to your anticipated procedure. While most patients can safely undergo this treatment, those with blood clotting diseases or who are on certain medications cannot have this treatment.
If you have been cleared for PRF treatment, your blood will be drawn at a Los Angeles laboratory prior to surgery to prepare the platelets. Following your surgery, the PRF matrix will be applied directly to the surgical site after the sutures are placed. This will not only accelerate healing, it will reduce post surgical discomfort.
